Traditionally Affiliate Marketing is practised by larger companies who will have Affiliate Managers who look aftre this whole area of Website Marketing. It is true that when done well Affiliate Marketing can have a very dramatic effect on a business but not every business can afford full time resources, especailly in the early days.
Although their may be no Affiliate Manager it would be unwise to think that it can be done effectively with little or no effort. Lady luck may help initially but she never stays around for too long, Merchants need to spend sometime getting the campaigns and offerings right.
Merchants provide the ultimate end product, which could be a sale via an e-commerce website or a sign up to a newsletter or for a seminar etc etc. When the campaign parameters have been set (what is to be sold what commission is to be given, any ongoing revenue from new customers or not etc.) they then offer it up to the Affiliates. Any Affiliate who feels they could fulfill the campaign needs by sending visitors to the merchant can then apply to sell for them. The merchant can then approve or not approve the Affiliate. Once approved the Affiliate will place banners etc on their site(s) and start to send visitors over to the Merchant. Hopefully that is the beginning of a fruitful relationship.
Affiliate Marketing is not an exact science and sometimes the best looking matches can fail so if that happens do not be disheartened just move on.

So in brief Merchants offer up their wares for marketing by the Affiliates, the customer still buys from the Merchant but if they were introduced by an Affiliate that is tracked and the Affiliate credited with the sale, wherupon the correct and previously agreed commission is paid.
